Tour de Helvellyn Ultra, 15 Dec
Report by Paul Alexander
In the brutal elements that ensued on Saturday 15th December, combined with the limited hours of sunlight at this late stage in the racing calendar year, the tour de Helvellyn race took place. This usual 38 mile ultra-distance race with a total climb of over 6500 feet was cut short to a still-impressive 27 miles due to the apparent safety risk associated with the very challenging weather conditions. Despite this wind-swept, cold and psychologically challenging event, a trio of Toddies were brave enough to step onto the start line with the other 205 competitors to take on this Cumbrian beast.
The race winner was Adam Perry in an incredible time of 3 hours 45 minutes whilst the Ladies winner was Sabrina Verjee in 4 hours 24 minutes.
Darren Graham was first of the 3 Toddies to finish in an excellent time of 4.48 for 35th position and claimed the 2nd v50 spot. Louise Greenwood (pictured) also battled through the cold wind and rain to cross the line in a respectable 7.23 for 37th lady. Elise Milnes also took part but unfortunately had to retire from the race.
