Howarth Hobble
On Saturday 10th March, the Haworth Hobble took place which features in the Todmorden Harriers Ultra Championships. The 32 mile course follows various Yorkshire Pennine paths and tracks from Howarth covering a multitude of moorland across the Calderdale area, including a tough climb up Stoodley Pike before returning to Howarth via Heptonstall and Crimsworth Dean.
The race was won by Ken Sutor of Cheshire Harriers in a blistering 4:33:18. The first female was Lorraine Slater of Barlick Fell Runners in an impressive 5:07:02.
Of the 313 runners taking part, there were 9 Todmorden Harriers, hoping to get their ultra champs off to a good start.
Mark Rochester (pictured, photo courtesy of Woodentops) was first back for the club with a top 20 finish to come 19th in 5:10:32. Mark has continued to improve over the ultra-marathon distances and this is just another example of how far he’s come. Richard Butterwick was the second Harrier back in 5:52:15 for 69th place with Jonathan Wright not too far behind in 5:58:25 for 76th.
Kate Mansell put in another strong run to be first Tod lady back in 6:23:10 for 116th. Louise Greenwood demonstrated her ultra-toughness after taking a fall just 3km into the race and cutting her knee in the process. She muscled her way (with a slight “hobble”) through to the finish in 6:45:56 before taking a trip to A&E for stitches.
