Todmorden Harriers’ Paul Brannigan became British Multi Terrain champion in the age 50-54 (V50) category at Bewl Water in East Sussex on Sunday. Brannigan placed 6th overall in a field of 624 runners. The 15 mile race consists of a lap of Bewl Reservoir with a hill section on the road between 12 and 14 miles. It was this section that sorted out the V50 gold and silver medals as Graeme Saker of Tonbridge, who had tailed Brannigan for 12 miles, attacked on the climbs and Brannigan reciprocated on the descent. It was Brannigan’s descending, honed on the Calder Valley hills, that secured gold in 1:32.22 thirty one seconds clear of Saker. Both athletes broke the V50 course record.
