Turnslack – Words by Richard Butterwick
Turnslack Fell Race was once again blessed with fine weather on Saturday, with just enough breeze to stop runners overheating on its 8 mile course.
The route started from Calderbrook and, with a slight revision this year to avoid the wind turbines, climbed steadily upwards to Freeholds Top. The return half featured two hard descents and steep climbs before the run in to the finish through deep bracken beds.
Richard Butterwick led the way for the Harriers, finishing in 23rd place with a time of 1:26:30. He was followed home by Andy Forbes and Phil Hodgson in 33rd and 35th places respectively, with Andy reaching the finish line at the church door in 1:29:10 and Phil just 15 seconds behind.
James Riley was the next Todmorden runner in 38th with a time of 1:30:53.
Jane Leonard finished in 1:37:42 for first v55 and 3rd woman overall.
Richard Blakeley and Mandy Goth completed the Todmorden contingent at this challenging local race.
Richard Butterwick was then back in action on Sunday finishing in 10th place at the Saltaire Shaker Trail Race, completing the 15km route in 1:02:00.
He was joined by Myra Wells who crossed the line in 185th position with a time of 1:40:48.
