Richard Butterwick travelled to the beautiful island of La Palma in the Canaries for the Transvulcania Mediamarathon.
The 24.1km route started at sea level and climbed to over 1800m in the first 18km through a dramatic volcanic landscape, made all the more difficult by the soft volcanic sand underfoot.
The final 6km were predominantly downhill, but there was still time to clock up a further 400m of climb amongst the 800m of descent.
Richard put in a respectable performance in the increasingly hot sunny conditions, finishing in 4 hours 14 minutes for 124th place out of over 400 runners, and 16th male veteran.
